There’s not many people you’ll meet who are more welcoming, friendly, or passionate than beekeepers.
This time last year, I traveled across the USA studying honey tasting and finding out more about beekeepers and honey around the world. I discovered the warmth and hospitality of fellow beekeepers firsthand.
I met Gena Karpf online in a beekeeping group. She not only welcomed me into her home just outside Chicago to help her with a hive inspection, but also arranged a day beekeeping with her bee mentor Chuck, the recently retired President of the Illinois State Beekeepers Association. Its an experience I’ll never forget with incredible people I’m lucky enough to now call friends.
My plan this year was to travel around Australia and meet some of the incredible beekeepers behind the honey I’ve been writing about on these pages. Sadly COVID restrictions have changed all that.
Until we’re all able to travel again, I’ll try my best to share with you some of our best honey, describe the delicious flavours, and at least make a brief introduction to the people behind the bees.
Please support your local beekeepers wherever you can. The work done by these amazing humans and their bees is immense, and the result is some of the world’s best produce. Once you taste it, you’ll never go back. I promise. In the meantime, please stay safe and keep positive.
Big hugs,
Jess (Honey Merchant)
